Enhanced 911 Coverage on Kauai

A newly installed "Enhanced 911" system will allow Kaua'i Police Department dispatchers to immediately pinpoint and digitally map the location of 911 calls made on most cellphones around the island. Before this technology was not available and it took much longer to attend to wireless callers and pinpoint their location.

The tracking could only be done previously with calls from land lines linked to residences or businesses. This made it very difficult before to find out where cell phone callers were located, and thus slowed down the process of bringing aid to these people. Thankfully the new system has taken care of this problem for the most part.

"Our emergency workers now have the capability of locating most 911 cellphone callers, including stranded hikers and people who are injured and can't describe where they're at," Kaua'i Mayor Bryan Baptiste said in a news release. This should help both locals and visitors alike to feel safer as they enjoy many of the different adventures that Kaua'i has to offer.
